After retouching

Detail of the upper-right corner.

Condition

The tile was broken into several pieces, with failing earlier restoration, surface dirt and staining. At the upper-right corner, shown here, a large area was missing.

Treatment

  1. 01Surface dirt and earlier restoration removed.
  2. 02Cracks consolidated and detached fragments re-bonded with Paraloid B-72.
  3. 03The missing corner reconstructed in Plaster of Paris and colour-filled with Araldite 2020 bulked with fumed silica, then shaped and sanded.
  4. 04Fills retouched with acrylic paints to reintegrate the glaze decoration.
  5. 05Surface protected with a thin application of microcrystalline wax.

Outcome

Structurally stable, with the missing corner reconstructed and the decoration visually reintegrated for display.
